What happens in music therapy sessions?

Those receiving therapy need have no musical experience.

Clients attend weekly sessions with a trained therapist either one-on-one or in small groups. The length of sessions is suited to the individuals but generally last around 30 minutes.

In individual therapy, music is improvised with each client and is based on the client's needs and responses. As the musical relationship develops, so the goals of therapy emerge. In group work pre-composed songs and activities are used as well as improvisation.

The therapist frequently plays piano or guitar, using his or her voice and other instruments. Clients are encouraged to make music too on instruments, to sing and to move/dance in whatever way they choose or can manage. The music therapist supports the client and explores with them all the communicative potential of their music making.

Fees

Fees are $40 per session for an individual session and $25 per client for a group session (subject to change). However, RMTC operates a sliding scale of fees for sessions depending on the client's means and what they can afford. This is designed to make music therapy  accessible within the community.

Fees make an important contribution to the running costs of the RMTC. However, it is our vision to make this service available and affordable to everyone.  No one will be turned away because he or she cannot afford the full fee.
