Alex Scott

Registered Music Therapist
Auckland Regional Centre

Alex trained as a music therapist in his hometown of Bristol, UK and graduated in 2022. Whilst on placement, he gained experience in working with young people with life limiting conditions, and adults suffering with addiction problems and their underlying traumas. In his final year he undertook a complex placement, working as a trainee music psychotherapist on an acute mental health ward.

Prior to music therapy training, Alex worked extensively in the creative arts as an actor, musician, composer and creative facilitator. From this experience, he began working in theatre productions tailored for young people with complex needs. It was this experience that lead him to recognise the potential in using music and creativity to build connections and aid non-verbal communication, which ultimately set him on the journey to become a music therapist.

Most recently, working as a community musician within the prison service, Alex has witnessed the socially empowering effect music can have for participants. In his view, an empathic approach that promotes self-expression and reflection, has enormous therapeutic and restorative potential.

Alex enjoys playing the guitar, electronic music production and connecting with nature through cycling, running and hiking. Alex will be joining the Raukatauri team in 2023, and is looking ahead with excitement to all the experience that working in Aotearoa may bring.
