Seul Gi Choi
Master of Psychotherapy Student (Child and Adolescent)
Auckland Regional Centre
Seulgi is currently in her final year of a Master of Psychotherapy, specialising in child and adolescent psychotherapy, at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT). She previously completed a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Auckland.
Seulgi was born in South Korea and immigrated to New Zealand with her family at a young age. She comes from a musical family, where engaging with music and playing instruments was a natural part of life. She previously played the flute and now plays the piano and keyboard, as well as sings.
She has been playing the keyboard and singing for many years, volunteering at her local church, and continues to do so. Seulgi has a strong passion for music and previously pursued an interest in music therapy.
Over the past three years, she has been studying and training to become a child and adolescent psychotherapist, working with a wide range of children and young people. Her clinical work is grounded in relational psychodynamic psychotherapy, with a focus on strengthening relationships to support positive change and emotional healing.
Seulgi has experience working with children presenting with anxiety, depression, aggression, trauma, ADHD, and autism-related concerns. In her training, play-based therapy is used as a key modality to explore thoughts and feelings with children, while work with adolescents may involve talking therapy alongside creative approaches such as music, art, or board games.
Seulgi is developing practice that aligns closely with the values and approach of the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, where sessions are client- and whānau-centred, holistic and grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori. She is committed to practising in a culturally responsive way that supports the best interests of each child and young person.
